146 pp., index. More than 40% of all German immigrants arriving at the port of Philadelphia in the early 19th century contracted to enter into servitude as a means of paying for their passage. Some of these contracts were eventually registered with the government and Professor Grubb has here abstracted 1,300 of them -- 90% of which were recorded between 1817-1810 -- providing the servant's name, buyer's name, occupation, township, county and state of residence, length of servitude, and the amount paid to the shipper.
