In an effort to preserve Pennsylvania's history in a a manner devoid of the usual dry dates and facts, the author constructed an extremely entertaining collection of stories, anecdotes and personable biographical sketches that truly provide a feel for the state, it's villages and towns, and its citizenry. The rist section is a brief outline history starting with Indian tribes that lived in Pennsylvania prior to the arrival of European settlers. The author discusses the original inhabitants, the Lenni Lenape, as well as the tribes of the Five Nations: the Onondagas, the Cuyugas, the Oneidas, the Senecas, and the Mohawks. Mr. Day goes on to describe the first Dutch and Swedish settlers and then provides a brief history of the colony of William Penn. Included in that history is the colony's role in the French and Indian wars as well as the American Revolution and the establishment of statehood, government, the constitution and various internal improvements. What follows that outline is an alphabetically arranged, county by county historical description of the state. The counties are: Adams, Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Berks, Bradford, Bucks, Butler, Cambria, Carbon, Centre, Chester, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia, Crawford, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Elk, Erie, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Huntingdon, Indiana, Jefferson, Jeniata, Lancaster, Levanon, Lehigh, Luzerne, Lycoming, McKean, Mercer, Mittlin, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Northumberland, Perry, Philadelphia, Pike, Potter, Schuykill, Somerset, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Venango, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Westmoreland, Wyoming and York. The book also contains a convenient index for counties, towns and villages as well as a general index useful for locating specific people and events. One hundred and sixty-five engravings illustrate the book.
