This volume provides a fascinating history of the Palatine immigration to America -- the remarkable story of a people who had been decimated by brutal wars and religious oppression, sought religious and political freedom elsewhere, were often used and manipulated by their alleged rescuers, but finally succeeded in their quest. This book presents a history of the Palatinate communities along the Rhine River in Germany and of the turmoil which led to the emigration. There is an account of their great exodus to the American colonies in the early 1700s, and of their settlement in the Carolinas, Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. The author presents a very detailed history of the Palatines in new York where he was a pastor of High-Dutch churches in Schoharie and Saugerties. He gives briefer acounts of the settlements around Berks County, Pennsylvania, and in the other colonies. The text is well written, contains may quotations from contemporary documents and various authorities, has citations to sources, and is illustrated with maps showing the communities of the Palatinate, in New York and around Berks County.
